8 . Drugs and property crime

چکیده
During the late 1990s national rates of reported property and violent crime in Australia have been increasing (National Crime Statistics Unit 1997; Chilvers 1998; Cook & Leverett 1998), as have deaths from opioid overdoses. In 1996 there were 526 opioid-overdose fatalities, the majority of them involving males (Lynskey & Hall 1998). Alongside the overdose data a number of indicators from subgroups in the general population suggest that illicit drugs are more widely available and are more commonly used. These indicators are supported by anecdotal evidence from various sources within the criminal justice system (such as police, solicitors, and health care and correctional workers) and the media that illicit drug use is increasing and that this use is causally related to the general increase in crime. Many commentators claim that 80 per cent of crime is drug related; others are more specific and claim that 80 per cent of property crime is drug related.

OBJECTIVE Routine activities theory purports that crime occurs in places with a suitable target, motivated offender, and lack of guardianship. Medical marijuana dispensaries may be places that satisfy these conditions, but this has not yet been studied. The current study examined whether the density of medical marijuana dispensaries is associated with crime. METHOD An ecological, cross-sectio...

The rising trends both in drug addiction and crime rates are of major public concern in Germany. Surprisingly, the economic theory of crime seems to ignore the drugs–crime nexus, whereas the criminological literature considers illicit drug use a main reason of criminal activities. This paper provides an econometric assessment of the drugs–crime channel within a Becker–Ehrlich model of crime sup...

The relationship between vegetation, transportation networks, and crime has been under debate. Vegetation has been positively correlated with fear of crime; however, the actual correlation between vegetation and occurrences of crime is uncertain. Transportation networks have also been connected with crime occurrence but their impact on crime tends to vary over different circumstances. By conduc...
متن کامل1 Drugs , Crime and Crime Reduction
The use of illicit drugs and high rates of crime are strongly associated. Under drug prohibition, drug-consumption and drug trafficking are inevitably defined as offences. Drug-related offences — especially incomegenerating property crime — are also common although psychopharmacological offences and violence between drug traffickers are less prevalent. Drugs and crime are also linked by many co...
